A capacitor is a device used to store energy. As the water fills up the capacitor, the membrane bends.

When the first gate closes, the energy supply is cut off from the capacitor, but the capacitor remains charged.

As the second gate opens, energy from the capacitor is able to flow out of the capacitor to be used by the waterwheel to power the light bulb.
