Therefore, most books go back to our first representation of a magnetic field as flat loops. You must simply remember that:
1) The magnetic field is not flat - it extends all around the magnet
2) The magnetic field is not just where the lines are drawn. The lines (or actually their spacing) is just a way of showing where the field is strong.
