Part of the laser beam then bounces off the polished back side of the cantilever moving upward and to the left.
The laser beam is then reflected from two mirrors. The second mirror is fixed in place but the first is again mounted on a small adjustable stage. This allows the operator to steer the point at which the beam strikes the "photodetector" light-sensing integrated circuit.
