To do this, we add a metal plate ("gate electrode") above (but not quite touching) the silicon crystal, immediately above the insulating gap.

We also add a small battery that can be connected to this plate (or an equivalent voltage signal).

When the battery is connected to the plate (or the voltage signal becomes positive), current briefly flows into the plate until it acquires a positive charge.
