To answer these questions, we must use virtual reality to show what is going on inside these objects.

All matter is made up of atoms. In an atom, the number of positive charges (protons) is precisely balanced by the number of negative charges (electrons).

However, when energy is provided (even by simple heat), atoms can release some of their electrons to become positive ions.
