We now add a battery (or a fixed voltage "DC" power supply).

The battery’s top (positive) terminal is wired to a long flat metal spring. At that spring’s right end it pushes against the top of the shaft, at the split rings.

The battery’s bottom (negative) terminal is wired to the second spring pushing against the bottom of the shaft, at the split rings.
